Surprise Proposal at Jenny Lake
I took my beautiful girlfriend (now fiancée) on a hike to Jenny Lake in the Grand Teton National Park. I told her I was taking a 'long-exposure shot' so she would have to stand very still. She was not expecting what came next...
Background:
My name is Eric. I grew up Texas. I have always had an immense passion for backpacking and travel. I've backpacked all over the states - a lot of the time solo. In 2010 I spent a couple of months in Nepal and India - at that time I had AK-47s pointed at me twice, was chased by a rhino, and almost died of an unknown illness in the jungle while tracking tigers. I started medical school just a few days after coming home from that trip. I am now a physician in Wyoming. I still spend every second I can out in nature - it's what keeps me sane through all of the crazy hours.
My fiance's name is Micah. She grew up in Missouri. She shares the same interests as I - travel and the love of adventure. At the same time I was overseas in Nepal and India, she spent a summer in Ghana teaching children. Her altruism helped so many people; she even started a scholarship program there. She moved to Texas in 2013 to go to graduate school.
When we met I knew that she was my perfect companion in every way. On our first date I took her on a motorcycle ride to a nature preserve and we hiked for hours. A couple of weeks later we roasted a diamondback rattlesnake over the fire together while on a multi-day canoeing trip. She was in the process of donating her eggs - a process that, as a medical professional, I was....... woefully uneducated on. I spent hours pouring through every study I could find on the subject. I gave her every injection and held her hand through every doctor's visit. As of now a couple is expecting a child because of her selflessness.
We have been successful in maintaining a beautiful happy relationship between Texas and Wyoming since I moved in May. We make every effort to see each other frequently. I was able to meet her parents and ask for permission to propose to her this past September. I bought her engagement ring from a metalsmith in Washington - a white gold hammered band with a black diamond. She had no idea. She came up from Texas and I took her on a weekend trip to Jackson, Wyoming. She had told me that Jenny Lake was a beautiful location that had been visited by three generations of her family. We woke up on November 1st and headed out into the shadow of the Grand Teton Mountains. I had planned on taking her hiking around the lake but the road had been unexpectedly closed. It was important to me that I propose at Jenny Lake, so we started the 9 mile hike. Once we arrived I set up the camera on a tripod and told her that I was taking a 'long-exposure shot' so she'd have to stand very still... the rest you can see on the video. On our way back storm clouds rushed in and we hiked the last couple of miles in pouring rain and hail - laughing every step of the way.
We are both basking in the ultimate joy of finding our perfect match. She will be moving up to Wyoming in May of 2015 - until then we will continue to skype, travel, and live every second of every day with happy gratefulness that we found one another.
