A water snake had an epic battle with a bull frog - eventually drowning it in a river and swallowing it whole.

The brown water snake bit the bull frog as it stood on a rock in a stream in Western Cape, South Africa, on February 25.

Stunned camper, Gwyneth, and her family noticed the incredible scene after hearing splashing in the water and recorded the epic battle.

The snake, which is non-venomous, had to coil around the frog and hold it in its jaws while pulling it under the water to drown it.

After more than 10 minutes, the frog eventually succumbed and the snake was able to retreat to reeds where it began swallowing the amphibian.

The epic battle was captured at the Tweede Tol campsite in front of several teenagers who are heard in the video saying ''it's busy swallowing it''.

Another adds: ''I can't believe this snake is swallowing this huge frog. It looks hopeless. I can't believe it, I really can't.''

Gwyneth said: ''We assumed that it wasn't poisonous because the frog was alive until the end. It was such a privilege to witness the struggle in nature. The snake was very beautiful.''
