84-year-old woman stunned thousands of devotees on festival day by frying pancakes in boiling oil using her bare hands in southern India.

Muthammal performed the famous
100-year-old ritual at the Bhadrakali amman temple on mudaliar patti street in Sirivilliputtur in Virudhunagar district.

The ritual is generally performed at the temple by devotees at midnight on the occasion of Mahashivratri every year. 

This year Muthammal and temple priests Sundara Mahalingam, Ganesan and Irulappan set up a wooden stove and fried the pancakes in hot ghee using their hands and distributed it to devotees. As part of the ritual, they also applied hot ghee on the forehead of devotees, who had turned up in large numbers at midnight to witness the rare feat.

It is noteworthy that Muthammal has been performing this tough ritual for the last 48 years. She also fasts 40 days to perform the ritual on the auspicious day.
