This is a scene that i happened upon when going to get some chocolate from the local shop in Spain. After hearing some music playing I walked around the corner only to be greeted by lots of people in robes. It was a very strange feeling as at the time I had no idea what was going on. I came back and did some research to find out it was a religious procession.
During the Easter Holy Week or Santa Semana in Spain Catholic religious brotherhoods and fraternities carry out sombre penance processions throughout the week. This happens in almost every Spanish town and city. This tradition dates back to the middle ages
the most iconic of the costumes worn by those taken part are known as the nazareno or penitential robe, this includes the conical shape hood called the capriote. The idea of the mask is to allow the users to show their penance with out revealing their identity.
