The early bird catches the worm

With the recent wet weather we have had, the worms in the fields are brought to the surface making them easy pickings for the lapwings.

It's fascinating to watch the lapwings as they get hold of the end of a worm with their beak and pulling it out of the ground stretching the worm like an elastic band, gobbling them up one after another.

This familiar farmland bird has suffered significant declines recently and is now a Red List species making it scarce in the UK.

Footage captured in the North Pennines County Durham on the 9th March 2019.
