Most ship-based tourist expeditions to polar regions include the option of experiencing a Polar Plunge – jumping off the ship, or in this case running from the beach into one-degree Celsius (34 degrees Fahrenheit) seawater in Whalers’ Bay on Deception Island in the Antarctic Peninsula. Those taking part were passengers on One Ocean Expeditions’ ship the Akademik Sergey Vavilov in December 2018. Staff manned Zodiacs to make sure everyone as safe, and other staff were ready on the beach with dry towels and windbreakers as people ran shivering from the water.
