Russian police rescued a little girl from a Moscow apartment in deplorable conditions after her mother allegedly left her alone for several days.

Neighbours had noticed the cries of a child coming from the eighth floor of their building and alerted the police.

The five-year-old girl was found living with rubbish up to her neck and was unable to speak.

The cries of the girl can be heard in the video moments before the rescuers arrive.

Further footage shows piles of rubbish accumulated inside the flat and a police officer on the scene.

The girl was later taken to a hospital where she is being treated.

Police have opened an investigation into the case and arrested the mother on suspicion of attempted murder, reports say.
