Amongst the Orcas (Killer Whales) in the Bremer Canyon

Buy video

The annual visit by Orcas (also known as Killer Whales) (Orcinus orca) to the Bremer Canyon, a kilometre-deep gash in the continental shelf off the south coast of Western Australia was first observed in 2005. Orcas, other dolphin and whale species and offshore seabirds such as Shearwaters and Albatrosses gather to take advantage of a seasonal upwelling of nutrient-rich water that produces an abundance of prey. Over 100 individual Orcas have been identified, photographed and catalogued by Project Orca, located at Curtin University in Western Australia. The Bremer Canyon Orcas have a varied diet, eating large squid, Oceanic Sunfish and even a Beaked Whale. Whale Watch Western Australia runs day trips to the Bremer Canyon from about January to March each year from the small town of Bremer Bay. This short video documents the Orcas sighted on March 7, 2019 from Whale Watch Western Australia’s catamaran MV Steep Point. Lots of Orcas, three species of Albatross, Shearwaters and a New Zealand Fur Seal were sighted, even though the day was rainy and overcast.
