Young elephant bull struggles to lift his heavy body out of the mud

It was a hot afternoon in the Kruger National Park when we came across a herd of elephants scattered along a riverbed. Some elephants were feeding on the lush grass growing on the riverbank while others were drinking water and some playing around in the mud. Elephants can not sweat to cool themselves and for that reason they love to take a swim or roll around in the mud. Watching elephants in the mud always makes for entertaining viewing. Majority of the herd started moving away from the river besides a few young males, still rolling around in the mud. The one specific young male looked like he also wanted to go but, he had one heavy problem. It was hilarious to see how this elephant could not build up enough momentum with his rolling movements to get himself back up and out of the mud. The struggling elephant repeatedly had to throw his legs up in the air in an attempt to get more momentum, so he could eventually get onto his knees. This behavior had everyone in laughter and reminded us of most people trying to get out of bed on a Monday morning. Eventually the young male elephant managed to roll over onto his knees. The young elephant looked tired after his struggle and remained resting on his knees for a little bit longer.
