Mean Zebras displace desperate Wildebeest from a salt lick

Mineral licks, also known as salt licks, are regularly visited by mammals and birds to obtain essential nutrients from a natural or artificial source of salts and other minerals. Natural licks are common, and provide essential metals such as sodium, calcium, iron, zinc and trace elements needed by animals for growth and to maintain their health. Farmers and wildlife managers often provide these nutrients in the form of artificial salt blocks, as is being done here at the Pilanesberg Centre in Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa. Plains Zebras (Equus quagga) and Blue Wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) congregated at the lick, but the dominant Zebras intimidated the Wildebeest, only allowing them to use the lick when they were done. On several occasions a Zebra backed up to Wildebeest at the salt lick, and drove them away with kicks from its hind feet.
