During a recent stay at a rest camp in the Kruger National Park, I decided to take the time and actually film the fascinating nest building skills of a bird called the southern masked weaver. These weavers are common and are mostly seen flying in and out of thorny trees, working hard to build their nest during summer time. I sat watching this bird building its nest for majority of the day. I was amazed to actually see the incredible detail with which this bird worked. The male weaver birds are true artisans and I was fascinated by the incredible craftsmanship and skill of the male bird while he continued to thread, knot and plait his construction until it resembled a neat oval dome. The male weaver took just under eight hours to complete his nest. It was inspirational to see the amount of work done by one dedicated and determined bird and how much he achieved after one full day of work. Watching this bird going about his craft in such a precise manner was worth every hour I sat there watching under the tree. At the end, the male bird looked very proud of his own creation.
