Tourists were filmed fleeing from the edge of a lagoon as a glacier calved in Iceland on March 31, creating large pulsating waves near the shore.

Captured by tourist guide Stephan Mantler on the edge of the Jökulsárlón lagoon, part of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier can be seen falling into the water creating a series of waves that come towards tourists on the shore.

As the visitors flee in shock the lagoon is subsequently riddled with huge, rolling waves that approach the rocks on the shore which sent watching tourists scurrying away from the incoming water.

Mantler said: “This area is only accessible with mountain guides and everybody shown in the video had been previously instructed to immediately leave the beach if a calving occurs.

“Due to the sheer size and proximity it was a bit of a close call but everybody was safe and stayed dry.”
