A Sea Lion mother and her newborn pup – with waiting vultures

Southern or South American Sea Lions (Otaria flavescens) occur along the coasts of South America and the Falkland Islands. Males have manes and are darker in colour and much larger than females – up to 2.7 metres (9 feet) long and weighing up to 350 kilograms (770 pounds). Females grow up to 2 metres (7 feet) long and weigh up to 150 kilograms (330 pounds). Pups are dark brown to black, and enter the water at about 4 weeks old. Mothers remain on the beach with their pups for about a week after birth, then leave them to fish for two- to three days before returning to nurse them. Cape Dolphin on East Falkland has a very large breeding colony of South American Sealions – we counted over 90 adults and newborn pups during our visit in January 2019. There were many bulls with small harems amongst the rocks on the beach, and almost all of the females had newborn pups. The colony was very noisy – adults bellowing and pups bleating. One bull and his harem of four females were on a rock platform above the boulders on the beach. One female had just given birth to her 12- to 13-kilogram all-black pup, who was trying to suckle. Several Turkey Vultures and Dolphin Gulls hung around nearby, hoping to eat the fresh afterbirth. The dominant male decided to climb higher on the rock platform, nearly crushing another newborn pup in the process.
