African Elephants (Loxodonta africana) are huge – males may be up to four metres (13 feet) at the shoulder and weigh up to 6,300 kilograms (6.2 tons). Bull Elephants sometimes decide to stand in the road, preventing vehicles from passing them. It is foolhardy to try to squeeze past – sometimes this angers the Elephant, and it may attack the car causing severe damage to the vehicle and even injury or death to the occupants. This bull was calmly walking towards a car in Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa– the driver was reversing to maintain a safe distance between her and the huge male Elephant.
