Strange Flap-necked Chameleon walking on a dirt road

The Flap-necked Chameleon (Chamaeleo dilepis) is a common arboreal chameleon widespread throughout sub-Saharan Africa. These strange lizards are able to change colour, either to blend with their surroundings or to express emotion. Flap-necked Chameleons are normally very difficult to find because they are usually hiding in shrubs or trees, not moving - and their camouflaged colours blend in perfectly. They are able to move their eyes independently of each other, and their toes are arranged with two on the inside and three on the outside so that they can grip twigs more securely. This Flap-necked Chameleon was caught crossing a dirt road in Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa, with a typical rocking gait, swivelling its eyes on the lookout for danger.
