Hard-headed Hindu devotees crack coconuts on each other's heads
A bizarre video of people getting smashed on their heads by coconuts has emerged from southern India. The event, which takes place during the monsoon months in Tamil Nadu state, is an annual event celebrating fertility and prosperity.
Footage shot on Aug. 3, 2018, showed people sitting in a line, awaiting their turn to get smashed in the head. While some people looked eager, most have a fear-stricken face, maybe from the anticipation of the pain.
Visuals showed the devotees getting a yellow dye smeared on their head before the coconuts are smashed.
This festival is very popular in the aforementioned province, but has failed to get the approval of the human rights advocates.
Reports said those who suffer injuries during the ritual, refrain from taking professional medical help, as a mark of respect for the Gods.
The festival generally falls on the 18th day of Tamil month Adi.
