Life is busy and tough for Falkland Shags facing the wind and predators
Imperial Shags (or Cormorants) (Phalacrocorax or Leucocarbo atriceps) nest in a large rookery near to the Bleaker Island Settlement. The rookery is a constant hive of activity during the long summer days, with cormorants flying out to the sea to bathe and feed, and returning to the rookery with food for their chicks. The rookery also has scavengers and predators in attendance – Brown Skuas, Kelp and Dolphin Gulls, Striated Caracaras and Snowy Sheathbills, all waiting for an opportunity to steal and egg or a young chick. A Brown Skua (Stercorarius antarctica) patrolled the edge of the colony, stole a Shag chick and ate it while nesting Shags looked on. Baby Shags are perpetually hungry, begging for food from the parent on the nest while the other is away at sea fishing.
