The Falklands Steamer Duck (Tachyeres brachypterus) locally known as the “Logger” is a goose-sized, flightless carnivorous marine duck endemic to the Falkland Islands. Falklands Steamer Ducks are found on rocky shorelines, where they dive for molluscs such as mussels and limpets, and less frequently crustaceans. When agitated, Steamer Ducks ‘steam’ – thrashing their stubby wings on the water – reminiscent of old-time paddle steamers. Nine large ducklings Falklands Steamer Duck are resting and preening their feathers on pasture on Bleaker Island, huddling together to shelter from the incessant Falklands summer wind as a cows drink from a stream and moo in the background. There are other species of wild ducks and geese on the beach by the cattle.
