The Falklands Steamer Duck (Tachyeres brachypterus) locally known as a “Logger” is a goose-sized, flightless carnivorous marine duck endemic to the Falkland Islands. Steamer Ducks mainly eat shellfish – similar to Eiders in the Northern hemisphere. When agitated, Steamer Ducks ‘steam’ – thrashing their stubby wings on the water – reminiscent of old-time paddle steamers. This female Falklands Steamer Duck was walking at the surf edge on The Neck on Saunders Island, West Falkland. She then joined her orange-billed mate and seven large ducklings in the sea near the surf break off the beach where they swam, with the male looking under water for food.
