Indian police managed to prevent a disaster on Monday when they spotted a family of three riding a motorbike down a highway completely unaware that flames were shooting out from beneath the vehicle.

A video filmed in Etawah District in the state Uttar Pradesh showed police chasing down the family and forcing them to pull over.

The male rider, a woman and a young child quickly got off the bike and were unharmed in the incident

All the three riders, including a child, had failed to notice that their bike had caught fire and were riding in highspeed.

A patrol vehicle chased the bike for four kilometres on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in Etawah in northern India and stopped them on time on April 14.

The policemen were alerted by a burnt smell and drove on to find out where the smell was coming from.

They saw that a bike, which had hung a bag over the exhaust pipe, had caught fire.

Sources said when the police tried to warn the rider he inexplicably sped up forcing them to chase him for four kms.

They managed to overtake the bike and pull away the riders from the burning vehicle.

The bike rider have been identified as Swantra Shakya, a resident of Barnahal, who was travelling with his sister Aarti and niece Shivani.

The head of Uttar Pradesh Police, Om Prakash Singh, shared the video and said:

“The policemen displayed exemplary professional commitment and outstanding conduct to avert a disaster. I announce my commendation disc to all the police personnel of PRV 1617.”
