A bizarre video has emerged of a newlywed couple flogging each other in northern India. The incident was caught on tape in Hoshiarpur city of the Punjab state.

The flogging was witnessed by a mob as it was part of the wedding tradition.

Visuals showed the bride dressed in lehenga and the groom in a striped t-shirt, a sleeveless jacket and a pair of black trousers.

The bride looked shy and smiled before he husband brought the tick down and hit her.

The woman reciprocated and the man followed suit, this time a little harder as people watched and laughed.

A woman was seen holding a stick on her hand and passing down instructions to the couple.

Even though bizarre, the ritual is part of the culture and is taken up sportingly by couples.
