Lions (Panthera leo) are one of the most sought-after mammals to see in African national parks. A particularly good place to see Lions is the magnificent Kruger National Park in north-eastern South Africa. Lions in Kruger sometimes form large prides – prides of 17-20 are not uncommon. This large pride of 17 Lions was standing in the rain on the H1-8 road in the northern section of the park at the turnoff to the Mazanje waterhole. The pride was led by two huge, black-maned males that were probably brothers. All of the other Lions were females, cubs and one young, nearly adult male. This young male, who had nearly no mane at all, left the others on the main road and lay on top of a stone-covered plinth that marked the turnoff to Mazanje, looking wet and miserable.
