Hindu devotees hold 'Fire Games' at south Indian festival

Thousand of Hindu devotees gathered at the Kateel Durgaparmeshwari temple, 28 Kilometers away from Manglore city on 22nd April early morning for the annual fire festival
Devotees were seen throwing burning palm fronds torches at each other as a part of the ritual which according to their beliefs, destroys evil and rids the participants of diseases.

According to a priest, the tradition is marked as part of honouring three of five elements of nature - Earth, Water, and Fire. Sports are played during the eight-day festival, themed according to the elements. Water sports are played on boats in nearby Nandini River and Earth sports are played with balls.
The participants are split into two groups and hit their opponents with burning torches. Each participant is allowed five throws.The two groups facing each other stand at distance of 15-20 metres, the people who suffer burns are sprayed with water of kumkum
