A baleful eye – face-to-face with a deadly Australian Tiger Snake
The Western Australian Tiger Snake (Notechis scutatus occidentalis) is one of the most venomous snakes in the world. Tiger Snakes hibernate over winter, and become less active as autumn comes, but are sometimes seen on warm on warm autumn days. We came upon this adult Tiger Snake was moving across mown grass at Herdsman Lake near Perth, Western Australia on a warm April day – it seemed to be hunting for frogs, its preferred prey. As we approached it quickly curled up, wary and watching us intently. It adjusted its body position a couple of times, but didn’t flee.
