To commemorate World Earth Day (Apr 22), a team of scuba divers recovered about 25 kilo grams of plastic wastes from the sea bed in southern India.

The exercise involved officials from the forest department in Mandapam, a panchayat town in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, along with Wildlife Institute of India (WII).

Visuals showed the team sitting on a boat getting on their position to take the plunge. On the count of three, they all jump. Further footage showed the team collecting plastic wastes from the sea bed.

The operation, conducted on Apr 24 in Palk Bay, was overseen by T.K. Ashok Kumar, wildlife warden at the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park.

Senior Ranger S Satish, who accompanied the other divers, told Newslions they wanted to highlight the issue and keep the sea clean.

The other divers were S B Aravind and Deepika from ‘Temple Adventures’, based in Puducherry; Rukmini Shekar and K. Madhu Magesh, researchers from WII and Foresters Anandan and Gunasekar.

The wastes recovered consisted of plastic wrappers and bags made of plastics among others.
