Demonstrators took to the streets in London for the annual May Day march today (May 1).

Attendees included unionists, left-wing activists, communist party groups and the English Collective of Prostitutes. The Labour MP John McDonnell spoke at the event.

It was also attended by the British Alevi Federation, representing the heterodox Muslim Shia faith that is one of Turkey's largest religious minorities, and campaigners for Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdish armed movement, the Kurdistan Workers' Party. He is currently in jail in Turkey.

Witnesses claimed there were thousands of protesters at the gathering.

May Day is widely marked by left-wing movements around the world although the UK typically sees smaller gatherings than in many other European countries.
