Dramatic footage has emerged from China of a suspected robber trying to escape police in heavy traffic in Sichuan Province on Monday.

The man causes significant damage to a number of other vehicles as he reverses along a gridlocked road in an attempt to get away from officers.

According to local reports, police were notified about a robbery early on Monday evening and began tailing a vehicle driven by the suspect.

After they hit heavy traffic, the officers got out of their car and approached the suspect who then drove backwards and hit at least four other vehicles – including a recently purchased Tesla.

According to a witness, the officers opened fire as a warning to the suspected robber.

The suspect was later successfully apprehended and taken to a police station at around 10pm (local time).
