The Emirates Air Line is a modern cable car that runs from near the O2 Arena in Greenwich, south London across the River Thames to the Royal Victoria Dock to the west of the ExCel conference centre. It opened in June 2012 and is operated by Transport for London (TfL). The cable care is based on the monocable detachable gondola (MDG) system which uses a single cable for both support and propulsion. When built it was the first urban cable car in the UK. There are 36 passenger gondolas each carrying a maximum of 10 passengers but only 34 are ever in use at the same time.
