Concerned citizens have reacted angrily after a security guard was caught administering intravenous glucose in an Indian hospital.

The uniformed guard at a government hospital in Thiruvannamalai in southern India found the right vein, inserted the needle, and started the flow of glucose.

A relative of a patient filmed the procedure secretly and leaked it to media sparking off widespread outrage and forcing local officials to promise a probe.

Doctors in the hospital said a severe staff crunch had prompted them to enlist all help available to cope with the crush of patients.
