Two baby elephants were rescued on Monday after they fell into a deep pit in Sri Lanka.

Residents of Kalagama in Galkiriyagama worked alongside wildlife officials for four hours to dig around the pit so that the animals could climb to safety on their own.

One of the calves then headed directly for the waiting herd but another walked into a nearby village.

However, rescuers managed to redirect the youngster and reunite it with its mother.

Two baby elephants which had fallen into a pit in a private land in Kalagama, Galkiriyagama were rescued today.Its trumpeting woke up the villagers early in the morning. The distressed mother and the rest of the herd stood nearby the well as rescue a team began to excavate around the trapped calf.Although one of the elephant calves went straight towards its mother after being rescued, the other one came after the villagers in pursuit.Later wildlife officials managed to send this elephant calf also to its mother.
The elephants were rescued subsequent by a joint operation carried out by wildlife officials and residents of the area.It took 4 hours for the rescuers to rescue the two elephants and unite the babies with their mother.
