Bizarre diet: Doctors remove over 100 iron nails from man's stomach in north west India

A bizarre video has emerged of doctors removing iron nails from a man's stomach. The operation took place on Monday in Bundi town of India's north west Rajasthan state.

Doctors at the Bundi government hospital were taken aback after discover the contents inside the man's stomach following an X-ray.

Visuals showed the doctors removing iron nails from the man's stomach.

At least 116 iron nails were recovered from the 43-year-old patient's body, who was identified as Bhola Shankar.

A team of doctors, led by Anil Saini, conducted the operation.

Doctor Saini said this was the first such instance in Rajasthan and the size of the nail, measured 6 and half centimetres, may make it the first such case in India, where so many iron nails measuring that size has have been removed from a man's intestine.

The patient has been deemed psychologically unwell and doctors believed the former was in the habit of swallowing sharp metal objects like nails and wires.

Saini said the patient was lucky to live as the nails did not puncture his stomach.

The patient's family too said they were oblivious about the man's daily activities and thus did not know much about his rather unusual diet.

A year ago, doctors in eastern India's Kolkata city removed more than 600 nails from a patients stomach.

Meanwhile, Shankar is recovering well.
