This is the moment a water buffalo in south India escapes a crocodile attack, but not before losing a leg to the vicious predator.

The incident occurred on the bank of river Krishna near Raichur in Karnataka state on May 20.

The buffalo had gone to the river to drink water when it came under attack.

As a few local men watched, the poor animal ran up the bank limping on three legs after losing a limb, before being consoled by other worried members of its herd.

An eyewitness, Basavaraja Badiger, said the crocodile had become a threat to local residents and animals. “Forest officials should take it away, he said.
