This is the stomach-churning moment a military chief in Thailand shows young recruits how to survive in the jungle - by eating a live lizard in front of the class.

The trainee soldiers gathered round to hear the experienced officer give his advice at a military camp in in Chonburi, eastern Thailand, on February 9.

But they were left feeling nauseous when the boss bit into the reptiles neck and peeled off its skin to expose the meat inside.

The high ranking officer explained that the tokay geckos could often be found living on tall trees and was one of the easiest food soldiers can find in the tropical forest.

The teacher says in the video: ‘’The meat is the only part you can eat, you can eat it right away or you can cook and grill it to make to more delicious.

‘’It tastes like a chicken or a frog and it also gives you high protein and energy that can make you full your stomach for one day.’’

When the demonstration ended, one terrified student was chosen to repeat the procedure and screamed out loud when the teacher approached him with the dead lizard.

The young lad managed to control his nerves and held the creature in his month as the trainer kept encouraging him that he had to overcome his fear to survive.

He says: ‘’I understand that you find this very unpleasant and disgusting but as soon as you’re in any difficult circumstances, you have to be brave in order to live.’’
