Hamadryas Baboons (Papio hamadryas) are found in the Horn of Africa and the south-western tip of the Arabian Peninsula. They were sacred to the ancient Egyptians, so are also called Sacred Baboons. Hamadryas Baboons live in patriarchal societies, with the dominant male controlling a harem of up to 10 females. They are omnivorous eating a wide range of vegetable foods as well as some insects, reptiles and small mammals. This male Hamadryas Baboon with his magnificent mane lives in Perth Zoo with his small harem. He was sitting on a rock, basking in the warm autumn sunshine, his intelligent eyes watching the people watching him. He then moved into the shade to sit on a log and yawned.
