A baby elephant that fell into a pit and was stuck in the slush in a village of northeast Indian state of Assam on May 30. The one and a half years old calf had got separated from its herd while they were raiding a farm in Numaligarh district.
According to local villagers, the calf might have fallen into the pit in the darkness and got separated from its herd.
When the day broke, local villagers heard the cries of the calf and came to his rescue. The video shows the kind villagers digging the mud around the calf with bare hands and spades and struggling to haul up the baby. An elephant calf generally weighs between 90kg and 120kg.
Emboldened by the supported of the villagers, the calf is also seen trying hard to get out of the sludge. Soon the forest rangers were informed about the incident. They rushed to the spot without wasting any time. The forest rangers with help from the villagers finally managed to pull out the pint-sized jumbo to rescue.
After the calf was taken out of the pit, it was not able to walk on its own properly. So the villagers decided to carry him in their arms to the rescue vehicle. Separated from its mother, the traumatised calf seems to be enjoying the love, care and attention given by the humans.
While the kind villagers in Numaligarh were rescuing the calf, some cruel villagers killed a leopard in upper Assam's Charaideo district.
