This is the moment a rampaging elephant rammed a tuk-tuk in an eastern Indian town.

The impact toppled the vehicle and flung the terrified passengers to the ground.

The wild elephant then dragged the tuk-tuk for a few feet before running away.

Two passengers were hurt in the incident which occurred in Madarihat town in Alipurduar district in eastern India on May 31.

The elephant was part of an 11-member herd, which entered the town and ran amok looking for food.

In a separate incident, an elderly woman was trampled to death by one of the creatures.

After the incident, local residents blocked the road in protest against the threat posed to them by elephants.

Forest officials visited the town and assured locals that the elephants would be relocated.

Divisional Forest Officer Bimal Kumar said the family of the victim would be compensated.
