Footage shows how flames ripped through the Chatuchak Market in Bangkok, Thailand, on Sunday evening (June 2).

More than 100 shops inside the tourist attraction were damaged by the blaze which officials believe was started by a faulty transformer.

Firefighters spent more than an hour bringing the fire under control after emergency calls were received at 9.30pm local time.

Pol Maj Gen Ekkachai Boonwisut, commander of the Metropolitan Police Bureau Division 2, said witnesses saw a spark at a transformer shortly before the blaze at the market.

Bangkok governor Asawain Kwanmuang is due to visit the site this morning to estimate the damage and meet vendors whose shops are affected by the fire.
