The Isle of Portland in Dorset held a D-Day anniversary service to commemorate the 75th year since the event today (June 6).

Veterans can be seen holding flags while wreaths were laid at the war memorial.

The Isle of Portland was used as an embarkation point for mainly American personnel in the weeks leading up to the Normandy landings.

Portland Harbour, Dorset was used as an embarkation point for personnel camped in Marshalling Area D. Portland also hosted a Port Workshop, a Field Hospital and a Prisoner of War Cage for enemy troops captured in Normandy. Inland from Portland, during the weeks leading up to D-Day, the troop camps of Marshalling Area ‘D’ mainly held US forces who embarked around Weymouth.
