The Appleby Horse Fair got underway this week in the English county of Cumbria.

The event is described on its own website as "an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers."

It attracts about 10,000 Gypsies and Travellers, about 1000 caravans, several hundred horse-drawn vehicles, and about 30,000 visitors.

The horses are washed and trotted up and down the flashing lane on most days of the fair.

Footage of my journey starting on a beautiful early Thursday morning on the Fairhill campsite where I met a real character just arriving who love to sing. Then down to the main event by the river in Appleby centre.

On the way down it was bustling with activity with a farrier shoeing horses at the side of the road and all types of horse-drawn vehicles going up and down the road, some at breakneck speed with the amazing sound of horseshoes on the road surface.

Down by the river you could get closer to the horses to admire their beauty and watch as some of the riders take their horses for a dip into the cold Waters of the river Eden.
