Two frogs were married today (June 8) in a bizarre ceremony in southern India which was designed to appease the rain god.

Residents of Udupi in the state of Karnataka decided wedding two of the amphibians might end a drought which has hit the coastal area in recent months.

They caught a pair of frogs from different villages, dressed them in garlands and wed them in a ceremony which closely followed Hindu tradition with hundreds of wedding guests looking on.

Despite the forced nature of the marriage, the frogs appeared calm throughout the nuptials and were later sent on honeymoon to the city of Manipal.

According to organisers, the newlyweds will later be set free to enjoy their life of wedded bliss.

In the Hindu religion, Indra is the god of the heavens, lightning, thunder, storms and rain.

Taking the initiative to appease the Rain God in a novel way and 'Udupi Nagarika Vedike' (Udupi citizen forum) arranged a marriage of the frogs in Udupi today. The two frogs were attired in Custom/specially made outfits for the ceremony and after they were married they were set free to enjoy their life of wedded bliss. Hundreds of invited guests participated in the frogs wedding, and the ritual began by catching hold of a male and a female frog from two different villages.

As per the invitation for the wedding released stated that it is a wedding of “Chi. Varun, son of Kalsanka, with Chi. Sou. Varsha, daughter of Kolalgiri Kilinje, so it did! The Wedding of Male frog namely “Varun” from Kalsanka and female frog namely “Varsha” from Keelinje near Kolagiri were performed true as per Hindu tradition. The frogs were taken in a decorated Cycle auto before its wedding.

Interestingly the frog couple will be sent on a Honey moon to Mannapalla near Manipal here in udupi.

The main intention in arranging this Frog Wedding was to appease the rain Gods who seem to have deserted the coastal district over the past few months, and the people have been struggling to get water for drinking and other basic purposes.
