The driver caught on camera in a scuffle with a blind man and his guide crossing the road in Paris has been fined 2,000 euros and banned from driving for 18 months, according to French media.

The man, a 68-year-old retired Spaniard, was found guilty of "volontary violence against a vulnerable person" having rendered him incapable of working for four days, after the case was heard on July 16 at the tribunal correctionnel in Paris.

He was also fined 750 euros for an act of violence against the blind man's guide, his brother, and 250 euros for refusing to give way, local media said.

He has been ordered to pay 1,800 euros in damages to the blind man, 1,500 euros to his brother and 1,000 euros in court costs.

French media reported the Spaniard of saying: "I don't know what happened, I behaved very badly. I was in a state of anger."

The scuffle broke out in central Paris on June 16, which saw the driver attack a pedestrian who was guiding a blind man across the road.

The video shows the two pedestrians using a zebra crossing near Avenue Ledru-Rollin when the driver of a black Audi saloon drives past them over the pedestrian crossing.

As the car passes, the blind man taps the front of the vehicle with his stick, presumably to show his annoyance at the driver's behaviour.

The driver then stops his car, gets out of the vehicle and repeatedly slaps the man guiding the blind man.

He appears to threaten the blind man verbally before eventually being encouraged to get back into his car by a woman, possibly his passenger.

Misdemeanours are judged by the tribunal correctionnel in front of a bench of three judges.
