Residents in New York City commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising today (June 28).

Footage captured yesterday (June 27) shows people queuing to enter Stonewall Inn, where members of the gay community fought back in a six-night riot against a police raid in the pub fifty years ago.

Some people stayed in the park in front of the pub, where statues of same-sex couple had been installed as well as a rainbow piano.

Many local businesses added rainbow flags to their windows to celebrate this historic event.

Stonewall riots have been defined by the LGBTQ community as a turning point in the global fight for queer liberation and civil rights.
