Cape Town residents blockade crime-ridden area to protest local violence
Residents of a crime-ridden area in Cape Town, South Africa blockaded all entrances and exits to the region.
Filmed on Wednesday (July 3), numerous children and adults can be seen holding up banners and posters with anti-crime slogans on them.
Hanover Park residents are calling for the national police minister and the Provincial member of the Executive Council for Safety and Security to prioritise crime prevention and law enforcement efforts in the area.
According to the release of recent crime figures, if the current crime trend is maintained, then Cape Town is on its way to be ranked as the most dangerous city in the world.
In November 2018, President Cyril Ramaphosa, launched the newly formed Anti-Gang Unit at a stadium in Hanover Park.
In June 2019, the much celebrated Anti-Gang Unit suffered a setback when six of its members were injured in an operation that is alleged to have not had the operational approval of senior commanders in the unit.
