Hundreds of Indian residents staged a parade to show their support for Thailand's beleaguered tourism industry.

Business owners and staff marched in traditional costume while banging drums in a Bhangra and Dholtasha troupe on red light strip Walking Street in Pattaya, Thailand on July 12.

The event came after a 30 percent drop in tourism this year to the notorious 'Sin City' sex resort, which officials are trying to re-brand as a family destination.

However, while the number of European visitors had dropped compared with the same period last year, tourists from the Indian subcontinent were up.

Damrongkiat Phinitkarn, the Secretary of the Entertainment Industry and Tourism Association of Pattaya, said: ''Europeans are no longer coming due to the strength of the baht and other factors like competition elsewhere.''

The tourism chief said that the number of Chinese visitors was also down, following several scandals and a boat sinking in Phuket last year in which 47 holidaymakers died.

However, tourists from India were the only demographic which had increased.
