In a rather bizarre incident, surgeons removed around 33 sharp objects, including a knife and razor blades, from a man's stomach in central India.

The incident took place on July 16 at MPN Khare Surgical and Maternity Nursing Home in Madhya Pradesh state's Chhatarpur city of the same district.

Yogesh, 30, was admitted to the hospital on July 14 after he complained of severe stomach pain.

Preliminary reports suggested the patient may have swallowed sharp objects.

To confirm their hunch, an X-ray was performed, which showed the presence of objects like knife, screwdriver, razor blades and plastic accessories inside his stomach.

According to Yogesh's mother, Kusma Thakur, her son showed symptoms of strange behavioural patterns.

"He grabs anything and eats it. But we were surprised when we came to know that he could eat such dangerous things too," said Thakur.

Meanwhile, Dr. MPN Khare, who performed the operation, said that Yogesh suffered from Altered Mental Status (AMS).

AMS refers to an alteration in mental status which causes changes in brain function, such as confusion, amnesia (memory loss), loss of alertness, disorientation, defects in judgment or thought, unusual or strange behaviour, poor regulation of emotions and disruptions in perception.

"It was a rather difficult surgery as he suffered from hypertension (high blood pressure). We are shocked and surprised to find over 30 sharp objects inside his abdomen", said Dr. Khare.

He added that Yogesh is currently recovering and will be discharged within the next four-five days.

However, such strange instances have occurred before in India.

A man in the north-west Indian state of Rajasthan, who swallowed 116 nails, underwent a successful operation in May.

In another incident, surgeons removed around three pounds of metals, including, nuts, bolts and jewellery from a woman's stomach in the western Indian state of Gujarat last year.

The weird and rare disorder where people eat sharp metal objects and other indigestible items are referred to as Acuphagia.

It is a category of the Pica condition, a psychological disorder characterized by an appetite for substances that are largely non-nutritive, such as ice, hair, paper, drywall or paint, sharp objects, metal, stones, soil, glass, faeces and chalk.
