A woman in India was filmed throwing a newborn baby girl into a drain in Kaithal city on Thursday 18 July.

Street dogs found the child and alerted people to the child's presence with their barking.

The baby was then saved and taken to the District Civil Hospital in Kaithal, where doctors said she was lucky to be alive.

It is thought to be a case of attempted female infanticide -- still a problem in parts of India, where a female child may be considered an economic burden

In a shocking case of an attempted female infanticide, a woman was captured on camera throwing a new-born baby in a drain in northern India.

The incident took place at Kaithal city of the same district in Haryana state on July 18.

CCTV footage of the incident shows a woman dumping the child in the drain after wrapping her in a polythene bag.

However, some street dogs in the area spotted the infant and started barking, alerting the locals.

Locals pulled out the baby girl from the ditch and alerted the police.

They immediately rushed her to the District Civil Hospital in Kaithal.

Doctors said that the baby, weighing around 2.4 pounds, was brought to the hospital in a critical condition and was fortunate to survive.

The infant is currently undergoing treatment.

Doctors said that the baby will be handed over to the Child Protection Department after she becomes stable.

She will be then moved to an orphanage after completing all necessary procedures.

Meanwhile, police said that they are in hunt for the accused.

"We have accessed the footage which shows a woman dumping the infant in the drain. We have filed an FIR and will find the culprit soon," said Pradeep Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO), Thana city
