Beautiful displays of traditional Thai dancing marking the start of Buddhist Lent in Ubon Ratchathani, northeastern Thailand, on July 17.

Hundreds of locals wore the silk costumes in organised displays watched by devotees and tourists for the start of the religious period.

The Lenten period sees monks retreat to temples to meditate and read scriptures during the monsoon rainy season which ends at the end of September.

They use candles to dispel the gloom. Around the country, locals honour the monks with giant candles and dance displays.

In Ubon Ratchathani province, they hold the most elaborate of all the celebrations.
