The Spotted Hyaena (or Hyena), Crocuta crocuta is a large carnivore with a wide distribution in the savanna regions of Africa. Hyaenas have complex societies and live in female-dominated groups or clans usually of 3-15 individuals, although greater numbers have been recorded. Cubs are born with soft, blackish hair and shelter in dens that may be dug by the clan, or more commonly are the abandoned burrows of other animals or even human structures such as drainage culverts under roads, like this one. The dens have large bare areas around the entrance where Hyaenas lie and females suckle their cubs. This Hyaena cub was lying at the entrance to its den in a culvert at the turnoff into Shingwedzi Restcamp in Kruger National Park, South Africa, while its mother basked in the early morning sun nearby. The cub was looking around nervously, and retreated into the culvert as a car approached.
