Watch: At least one killed, seven missing as ferry carrying 20 sinks in northern Indian river
In a tragic accident, a ferry carrying 20 farmers drowned in the Sarayu river in northern India, killing at least one passeneger.
Seven others are said to be missing.
The incident took place at Laukahi village in Uttar Pradesh state's Bahraich district on July 28.
Visuals of the incident show the overcrowded boat drowning mid-way in the river.
According to reports, the farmers were on their way to sow paddy in the fields and were carrying sacks of manure on the boat.
Video shows farmers in cycles travelling in the boat, anchored by few other men.
The sacks of manure start to slip out of the boat mid-journey.
People are seen jumping out of the boat and swimming across the river, inorder to avoid being drowned.
Seeing the distressed passengers, few people on shore rush to rescue them.
According to reports, as soon the sacks began to slip out from the boat, a group of farmers got up to catch hold of the sacks in order to prevent them from falling into the river.
However, as a result, the boat started tilting in and sank into the river.
Five people who fell from the boat managed to reach the shore and alert the locals who in turn, informed the same to local administration and the police.
Visuals and images also show local authorities, police and villagers rushing to the accident spot.
One woman has died and at least seven are feared missing in the accident.
11 people have been rescued so far.
The deceased woman has been identified as Nainaki.
Meanwhile, police said that divers have been deployed at the accident spot to trace the missing people.
The water level of the Sarayu river has also been increasing since the last few days owing to the continuous rainfall in the region.
At least 14 people, including a minor, have been killed in rain-related incidents in Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh states, earlier this week.
In Uttar Pradesh, at least nine people had been killed in rain-related incidents in the last one week.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that rainfall activity had increased over central India, Northern Plains and Western Himalayan region since July 24, with the northern parts of the country experiencing light to heavy rains.
