Taken at a small village in Sakon Nakhon, this old lady and her daughter show us how they make these amazing wickerwork baskets from bamboo material. Her grand daughter who is only 9 years old, can also make these baskets, he learned herself simply by watching her mother and grand mother.
The process starts by cutting bamboo into thin pieces, about 15 inches long, then they are shaved by hand using a metal tool, to remove the rough edges and get all pieces to the correct thickness. This is shown in the first part of the video. Then she starts the intricate work of weaving these pieces of bamboo into a flat piece of interwoven bamboo. Then she takes this flat piece and bends it into a circle and knits them together, and there, just like magic you have the start of a new basket. The video moves on from here to show how she completes the basket and finally shows a set of completed baskets which are used to carry cooked rice in, especially useful for taking lunch to the work place, such as the paddy field. This lady and her sister have a huge back order of baskets to complete, due to high demand from locals.
